The Presido Theatre – Historic Renovation

 

The project is the renovation of the Building 99 located at the Parade Grounds of the Presidio in San Francisco is referred to as the Main Post Movie Theater located at 99 Moraga Avenue.

The existing building structure, built in 1939, lies on a lot of 48,441 square feet (.997 acres) and is surrounded by roadways on all four sides. The structure is two stories in height and is listed as a contributing structure to the Presidio of San Francisco National Landmark District. (NHLD). The period of significance is between 1939-1961.

The building which has been shuttered and deteriorating since it was closed in the early 80s will be rehabilitated to function as a performance theater. Improvements to the basement within the theater structure will provide storage and support spaces.

Two addition elements (pavilions), including a below grade bathroom structure and a two-story rehearsal and back of stage structure are to be developed on the west side of the historic theater building.

The Margaret E. Haas Fund is the project sponsor with PUDC as the Development Manager. The design team is led by Hornberger Worstell with Knapp Associates advising on the historic design.

The development team is working with the United States Park Service and the Department of the Interior on compliance with the Department’s Standards and facilitation of historic tax credits.
